Super September News

Upcoming dates:  Sept. 6- No School/Labor Day

Student of the Month:  Noah Valdivia-Mendez

Noah has been an excellent classroom citizen.  He has good manners and is very well behaved.  Noah has been eager to learn and has been fun to have in my class.

Themes:  Human Body & All About Me

Show and Tell:  Sept.3- A Picture of Him/Herself

                          Sept.10- A Favorite Toy

                          Sept.17- Something Black

                          Sept.24- FREE CHOICE

                          Oct.1- Something Musical

Language Arts:  This month we will be beginning spelling tests.  It is very important to study the words at home with your child.  We will be having a practice test on Thursday.  If the child gets all ten words correct on Thursday, they don't have to take the test on Friday.  If they don't get all the words correct they will take the test again on Friday.  I will use the best score of the two for figuring grades.

We will be learning words with short vowel a, short vowel i, digraph ck, and short vowel o.  Each week we will be working on the new concepts.  The spelling words will also be words that are associated with the lesson of the week.

We will also be starting reading groups in September.  The kids will be split into groups of 3 or 4 to work with me.  They will be learning to sound out words and use the sight words that they have learned to read stories.

Math:  We will begin working on the penny, the value and what it looks like.  We will also be working on telling time by the hour and counting to 100.  We will be doing some hands on activities to help them learn the concepts that we will be going over this month.

Science:  This month we will be working on learning about our body.  We will be learning all of the visible body parts along with the major body organs. We will be learning about the heart, lungs, brain, stomach, intestines, and other body parts.  We will be discussing the functions and locations of each organ.

Social Studies:  This month we will be focusing on learning about ourselves.  Each child will be learning their phone number and address.  It would be very helpful if you would spend a little time going over this at home as well.  We will also be learning about our likes and dislikes.  We will be talking about what makes each of us special and different from one another.

Arts and Crafts:  Due to the fact that we do painting and do other somewhat messy projects from time to time, I am asking for donations.  We need old adult size t-shirts that we can use for painting and projects.  If you have any that you would be willing to donate to the class we would highly appreciate it.  Thanks!
