About me

Aloha! My name is Rachel Johnson and I have been with Kennedy Academy since June of 2009. I have been an ordained children’s Pastor since September of 2001 and am currently the Children’s Ministry Director of SOP Topeka. In that most of my experience comes from my church, I am able to offer the children I am teaching from not only an educational standpoint, but an inspirational one as well. It also helps that I’m really just a big kid, myself! I still love superheroes and Saturday morning cartoons, singing silly songs, and acting goofy!

Marvelous May!

 Language Arts:

During the month of May we will continue to review our alphabet, continuing on with the letters we had the most trouble with over the year: “Vv”, “Zz”, “Ss”, “Xx” and “Qq”, and with a little help from our friends Victor Vampire, Zachary and Zena Zebra, Sadie Seal, Max the Ox/Felix Fox and Quentin Quail, we’ll be reviewing and relearning their songs, their sounds, and how to identify, trace/write their letters.

Working at home: We are slowly working up to writing our own names, so practicing at home with your child will aid in this life-long skill! Also, singing the Animated Alphabet songs with your child helps them not only identify their letters, but also aids in letter-sound recognition.

Science/Social Studies:

The best nature activities are the simplest! So for our Nature theme, we’ll be sticking to simple: we’ll go outside and watch ants crawl, find a dandelion and rub it, find a dandelion that has gone to seed and blow on it, find a stick and poke/draw on the ground with it, and then lay on our backs and look up! There’s so much of nature to explore and appreciate, right out our front door! We’ll also talk about animals and their habitats. We’ll go outside, line up on the fence, and then imitate how animals get from one place to the other in nature (Example: Snakes slither, bunnies hop, spiders crawl…ewww. Spiders!!!)

Then, we’re bringing the ocean to our classroom! Using our handy-dandy magnifying glasses, we’ll examine seashells and sand up close and also do an experiment to compare Ocean Water vs Fresh Water.

  •    Apr 2 – Melting crayons
  •    Apr 13 – Blowing Paint
  •    Apr 20 – Paint with water
  •    Apr 27 – Spray “painting”

 Language Arts:

During the month of April we will continue reviewing our alphabet, starting with the letters we had the most trouble with over the year: “Ff”, “Hh”, “Uu” and “Ee”, and with a little help from our friends Farley Fox, Hippy Hippo, Uncle Upton, and Ellie Elephant/Edgar Elf, we’ll be reviewing and relearning their songs, their sounds, and how to identify and write their letters.

Working at home: We’ve been working on letter sounds, so play games with your child while you’re making dinner or driving in the car! Point to something and ask them what letter it starts with, then say the sound with them.

Math:

Our counting goal will continue to remain at 55 for the rest of the year, or at least until we master up to that. We will be identifying the numbers 16, 17 and 18, as well as the shapes Star, Circle, Triangle and Square.

And don’t forget matching numbers to objects, 0-10, and continuing an avg. pattern (ABBABB).

Science/Social Studies:

You know the saying, “If you don’t like the weather in Kansas, wait 5 minutes and it’ll change.” Since we are Kansans, one of our Science subjects in April will be taking a closer look at weather. We’ll learn about the water cycle, and how rain, clouds, fog, snow and sleet are all forms of water. We’ll do some cloud watching, learn how to pick images out of the sky, and then go inside and then try to do it on paper!

Then, to add a little science to our Easter theme, we’ll talk about all the different kinds of animals that come from eggs. Snakes, birds, turtles, fish, lizards – all these creatures are born from eggs, and not the kind the Easter bunny likes to hide!!

Special Projects:

~Soldiers’ Angels~

I received an email from Steven during Spring Break and guess what??!! He gets to go home soon! He’s “packing up and preparing for departure” now and will be finished with his service as of May 1! As happy as I am for him, I have to admit I’m a little sad that we will lose touch. He has been awesome to us, taking the time out of his busy schedule to write us back whenever he can and getting to know the kids through our letters. On that note, we will continue sending letters until he goes home, and send just ONE more care package. This one will be entirely on me, but I’d like to ask you guys for something special. If you would be willing, I would like each family to write him a short letter. It doesn’t have to be long, and it definitely doesn’t have to be complicated. Maybe just a card or a short paragraph thanking him for his service. It will be our last gift to him, so please consider participating. I will need these by April 1st.

~The Flat Stanley Project~

So far, our class has sent out 3 Flat Stanleys – one to North Carolina, one to Pennsylvania, and one to Nebraska – and I hope to send out more before we’re done. If you haven’t already, please discuss with your child where you would like to “send” their Flat Stanley. We want Stanley to explore, so if possible, please send him someplace far away – out of state is encouraged!

So, starting over with the letters “Ff”, “Ss” and “Bb”, and with a little help from our friends Farley Fox, Sadie Seal, and Baby Barnaby, we’ll be reviewing and relearning their songs, their sounds, and how to identify and trace their letters.

Math:

Our counting goal will stay at 55 for the month, but we’ll be moving up to learning to identify the numbers 14, 15 and 16. And don’t forget about shapes! We will practice recognizing and drawing the following shapes: Circle, Diamond, Oval and Rectangle.

We will also continue working on sorting by color and shape, and continuing an average pattern (ABBABB).

Science/Social Studies:

For our Dental Health theme we’ll do an experiment that will help the children realize how important brushing their teeth can be. All it takes is an egg, a tea bag, and a toothbrush!! After boiling the egg with the tea bag it be stained brown, but giving each child a chance to “brush” the egg will show them this is what happens on their teeth, too, when the stains begin to disappear! We’ll also focus on the proper way to care for our teeth as we start brushing our teeth every day after lunch.

For our Bugs/Insects theme, we’ll talk about many of the creepy crawlies and why they are important to our world. Then we’ll read my own personal favorite children’s book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and discuss how a caterpillar builds a cocoon and turns into a butterfly!!

Special Projects:

-Soldiers’ Angels~

I received an email from Steven on February 11th, thanking us for January’s Super Bowl Care Package. He said that it arrived just in time for the game. He also let us know that he’s changed jobs and that it is career progression. He ended his email saying, “I thank you for continuing to send the emails; really makes for fun reading.”

And I want to thank all the families who donated items for February’s care package! Not only did we send our Soldier the Valentine’s the kids brought specially for him, we were also able to send him a special Valentine’s Day treat; something he has been in need of since we first adopted him in August – a new pillow!

This month’s Care Package theme: “We’re LUCKY to have a Soldier like YOU!”

What better way to show our appreciation than to send our soldier lots of things for good luck? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Paper Shamrocks/St. Patrick’s Day decorations
  • A Blarney stone
  • Green St. Patrick’s Day necklaces
  • Green candy
  • Green drink mix
  • A funny green hat
  • ANYTHING ST. PATTY’S DAY!

curriculum…

-Soldiers’ Angels~
Soldiers’ Angels (www.soldiersangels.org) is a volunteer-led, non-profit organization with the purpose of providing aid and comfort to the men andvwomen of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Veterans.

As we have many families in our school that have loved ones in some form of
service, I feel this is a good way to help our children understand just what our
soldiers do for us and show our gratitude in the process.
We have adopted a wonderful Military soldier named Steven who is currently
stationed in Afghanistan. Together, we write our soldier one letter a week and
send him one care package a month.
How can parents help? By donating small items to send in that monthly care
package. Please help us bless our soldier and send him a little taste of HOME!

A Note from Ms. Rachel: You may have noticed that nothing went out about
the January Care Package for our soldier, Steven. That is because I wanted
to give our families a little recuperating time after the Christmas holiday, so
last month’s Care Package was totally on me! Now, we’ve had some really
fun themes these past several months, so I think for February we’ll get back to
basics and just go with a “Personal Hygiene” theme. Here are some suggestions
of items we would like to send:

-Shampoo/Conditioner
-Moisturizing Lotion (non-scented)
-Razors
-Travel size toilet paper
-Deodorant
-Foot Powder
-Odor eaters
-Sunscreen
-Eye drops
-Soap
-Q-tips
-Travel size mouthwash
-Facial cleansing pads

Any and all donations are immensely appreciated! For details on the Soldier’s
Angels Project, go to www.soldiersangels.org.

-The Flat Stanley Project~
From now until the end of the school year, our class will be participating
in the “Flat Stanley” Project. If you’ve never heard of it, the project is an
international literacy activity that allows children to experience new and
interesting places and share them with their friends…without ever leaving their
classroom!

In preparation for this project, we’ve been reading the Flat Stanley series by
Jeff Brown. The story goes like this: Stanley Lambchop is a normal little boy.

That is, until one night the bulletin board above his bed falls from the wall,
flattening Stanley in his sleep. He isn’t hurt, and in the days to follow, makes
the best of his altered state. Soon he is entering locked rooms by sliding under
doors and playing with his younger brother by being used as a kite. One special
advantage to Stanley being flat is that he can now visit friends by being mailed in
an envelope. This is where you come in!

If you haven’t already, please discuss with your child where you would like
to “send” their Flat Stanley. We want Stanley to explore so if possible, please
send him someplace far away – out of state is encouraged! This is the 3rd year
I have done the Project with my students, and we’ve had Flat Stanley’s go as
far as Jerusalem, Israel, to an army base in Germany, and visit an orphanage in
Kenya, Africa! And for a bit of fun closer to home, each weekend for the rest of
the school year, I will be awarding one lucky student the honor of taking home
the “class” Flat Stanley and documenting his or her adventures together with a
journal entry and photographs.

For more information on the Flat Stanley Project, go to http://
www.flatstanleybooks.com/

Language Arts:
For our Language Arts curriculum, we use the Animated-Literacy program,
created by Jim Stone, to help our children learn reading, letter recognition, and
writing with the use of Alphabet Stories, Songs, Gestures and Coloring pages.

During the month of February, with a little help from our friends Victor Vampire,
Winkie Walrus, Felix Fox/Max the Ox, Yakety Yak and Zackary/Zena Zebra we
will finish up the alphabet with the letters “Vv”, “Ww”, “Xx”, “Yy” and “Zz”, learning
their songs, practicing their sounds, and how to identify and trace their letters.

Working at home: Remember, parents play a vital role in their child’s
education! Working with your child at home is an excellent way to help
them succeed and it’s not too early to start! Every Monday your child will
be sent home with a coloring page of the Letter of the Week’s Animated
Alphabet friend and the words to their song. Please sing these songs at
home with your children!

Math:
We will continue to count to 55 and will also be learning how to identify the
numbers 13, 14 and 15. And don’t forget recognizing and drawing the following
shapes: Heart, Triangle, Square and Circle!

Working at home: Here are this month’s number rhymes:
#13 – 1 and a 3 send 13 up a tree
#14 – 1 and a 4 tell 14 shut the door
#15 – 1 and 5 keep 15 alive

Science/Social Studies:
There’s a lot going on this month! First on the agenda: sensory play makes for
a very fun day! Children learn through sight, sound, taste, touch and… SMELL!!
For Valentine’s week, we’ll get our noses involved in a fun game of match-up. I’ll
be cutting up construction paper hearts and attaching a piece of cotton to each.
Using a variety of fragrances I’ll dab a little on each cotton ball, mix them up, and
have the children try to find the matches by smelling each one.

The following few weeks we will concentrate on how to treat others, focusing
on why it is wrong to fight and being rude to friends. These situations often occur
in school because children like to be the first in line, have the biggest piece
of cake, the pretties color object, or just plain want to be noticed in a group.
We will talk about how to respect and care about others’ feelings, and discuss
the “Golden Rule”!

Finally, we’ll do an experiment that will help the children realize how important
brushing their teeth can be. All it takes is an egg, a tea bag, and a toothbrush!!
After boiling the egg with the tea bag it be stained brown, but giving each child a
chance to “brush” the egg will show them this is what happens on their teeth, too,
when the stains begin to disappear!

Show and Tell:
Show-&-Tell isn’t just for the children at school. Show-and-Tell starts at
home and it is a great opportunity for parents to work with their children and
encourage learning! This opportunity takes place every Friday and will always
(unless otherwise specified) relate to that week’s theme. Please be a part of this
wonderful activity – supervise your children as they make their choice of what
they want to bring to show at school, ask them why they chose that particular
item and how their choice relates to the theme.

  • Feb 3 – FREE CHOICE!
  • Feb 10 – Something RED or something to do with VALENTINE’S DAY
  • Feb 17 – Something a FRIEND GAVE YOU!
  • Feb 24 – Something to GIVE to a FRIEND!
  • Mar 2 – Something to do with TEETH
